How it works

The science of feeling better.

TMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused magnetic pulses to reactivate brain circuits involved in mood. Here’s what to know.

What happens in the brain

In depression, certain areas of the brain that help regulate mood, especially a region behind the forehead called the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, are often less active than usual.

TMS uses a magnetic coil placed gently against the scalp to deliver focused pulses to that region. The pulses activate the underlying brain circuits safely and non-invasively, stimulating them hundreds of times over a few minutes.

Over a full course of treatment, this repeated stimulation is designed to help those circuits work more normally again.

What a session feels like

You’re awake and relaxed

Sit back in a comfortable chair. No anesthesia and no sedation for the TMS itself.

A tapping sensation

Most people feel a light tapping on the scalp and hear a clicking sound. We provide earplugs.

Just a few minutes

Each stimulation session lasts only a few minutes.

Side effects & safety

TMS is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are mild scalp discomfort and headache during or shortly after treatment, and these usually ease over time. Seizure is a rare risk, comparable to or lower than rates seen with common antidepressant medications.

TMS may not be right for people who have:

  • Non-removable metal in or near the head (such as aneurysm clips, plates, or fragments)
  • A cochlear implant, deep brain stimulator, or vagus nerve stimulator
  • A pacemaker or implanted defibrillator (requires review)
  • A history of seizures, serious head injury, or certain neurological conditions (requires review)

A licensed clinician reviews your full medical history before any treatment. Dental fillings and braces are usually fine.
